Call for Conference Presentations

Yukon by Yukoners: Pleistocene to Present

Late Fall 2022
Live-streamed and in person at Tagish, Haines Junction, Dawson, and Whitehorse
Yukon Historical and Museums Association

Deadline for Proposals: April 30, 2022

It is an exciting time to be living in the Yukon as Yukoners work on many heritage projects that years ago were the purview of southern experts and professionals. Yukon by Yukoners will bring our community together, in person and online, to explore what "heritage" means in the Yukon and how Yukoners approach and share our heritage. This coming together will be a critical opportunity to reconnect with each other, make new connections, strengthen community, learn, celebrate, and advance heritage practice in the Yukon. Presentation proposals are invited on Yukon heritage-related projects, research, or other initiatives conducted by Yukoners. Example topics include but are not limited to:

  • Built heritage: its care and significance
  • Northern mapping
  • Archival and artifact conservation and preservation
  • Place names
  • Inter-cultural communication: the importance of definitions
  • Family connections
  • Cultural renewal
  • Travels on the land
  • Significant Yukon landscapes
  • Food sustainability and cultural significance
  • Local history projects
  • Presenting history online
  • Oral history projects
  • Publications: writing our history, hearing our voices
  • Interconnected communities
  • History and culture in artistic practice
  • The importance of music and dance
  • Studies on education, justice, wellbeing, palaeontology, archaeology, and/or governance

Presentation formats:

  • Slide shows
  • Session panels
  • Individual papers (15-20 minutes)
  • Workshops
  • Cultural and artistic demonstrations
  • Posters and paper-based exhibits

Please include the following with your submission:

  • Title of the proposed presentation, format, and maximum one-page summary with details of the connection to the proposed topics
  • Preferred community or place where the presentation will occur
  • Preference for recorded or live presentation
  • Author(s)/participant(s) name(s), contact information, and a brief biography of each.

Some presentations will be recorded for presentation during the conference. All participants will have the option of having their presentations available on a website. This will count as publication and those who agree will sign a release.
